Neverwinter Nights 2: Nightsinger's Bane

The Villains

Neverwinter NightsThe primary antagonists of NX4: Nightsinger's Bane are divided into two groups - The Kaiser's Companions and The Black Dog Pirates.

The Kaiser and his allies have largely taken over Neverwinter by the beginning of the story, and they present the overarching threat in the adventure. However, they are villains with good publicity - though their hearts are wicked, they appear to be heroic - their rise to power a dark mirror of the Knight Captain's own. Direct action against them will be seen as villainy, and their schemes will need to be unraveled before the player can act directly against them.

The Black Dogs are a group lead by Captain B. Blessed, and have been charged with destabilizing trade along the Sword Coast by The Kaiser. Their encounters are more comedic, and usually rely on some gag or gimmick. The Black Dogs are designed to give the players a breather from the nastier, more technically challenging encounters found in NX4, and the mangy crew is quirky and not entirely unsympathetic.

The Kaiser

Name: The Kaiser
Race: Cambion
Age: ???
Class: Blackguard, Fighter
Favored Weapon: Unholy Reaver
Deity: Cult of Graz'zt
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Faction: Graz'zt's Legion
Challenge Rating: 30

Neverwinter Nights

Background:
The Kaiser is being of limitless vice, wicked cunning and unending malice. He is the child of the Demon Lord Graz'zt, and works with a host of evil allies to further his father's goals.

Background as a member of the Neverwinter Nine:
"The Kaiser gained a reputation as a great champion of good and a hero to the people of The Sword Coast. His band of adventurers is said to have prevented the Uthgardt Thunderbeast Tribe from launching an attack on Neverwinter and the surrounding cities. During the war against the King of Shadows, his forces held the gates of Neverwinter against the undead horde, saving the city from complete destruction. Additionally, The Kaiser's party slew the Shadow Dragon Das'mag'Xallyion, and then pushed back an incursion by the Orcs of Old Owl Well, keeping vital trade routs open. Most recently, the heroes thwarted a Luskan assassination attempt on Lord Nasher himself."

"Not content to sit idle, The Kaiser used much of his captured dragon hoard to renovate and rebuild portions of Neverwinter still damaged from the war, earning him the adoration of both peasant and noble alike."

"In recognition of his many heroic deeds and unfailing service to Neverwinter, Lord Nasher appointed The Kaiser to fill the vacancy in The Neverwinter Nine left after the mysterious disappearance of The Knight Captain. While this move did not sit well with several members of Nasher's inner circle, the edict was wildly popular with the citizenry."

Sendai Ri'fialle

Name: Sendai Ri'fialle
Race: Drow
Age: 172
Class: Cleric, Warpriest
Favored Weapon: Matron's Morning Star
Deity: Lolth
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Faction: Drow Army
Challenge Rating: 25

Neverwinter Nights

Background:
Sendai Ri'Fialle was born into a powerful drow family in the great city of Menzoberranzan. By virtue of her gender and birth, she was destined for greatness. But there was more - her heritage was... unique... for Sendai was the product of a union between her mother and the Murder God Bhaal. Not only would she head one of the Drow's grand houses, she was amongst the first - and strongest - of all the Bhaalspawn.

As she matured in mind, body, power and ambition, Sendai first seized control of her house, then much of the Underdark, and finally joined four other uniquely empowered Bhaalspawn - forming the shadowy organization known as "The Five." Together they enacted a plot each hoped would result in one of them taking their dead father's place.

Her reign came to an abrupt end when she - along with the rest of The Five - were slain at the hands of a large band of adventurers from Baldur's Gate and Amn.

As she lay dying, Sendai watched her body disintegrate, her divine essence stripped away, one small piece at a time. Her consciousness was taken to the Demon-web Pits of Lolth, where she remained until the evil warlord known only as Kaiser forged a pact with Sendai's wicked god, allowing the Blackguard to claim the drow as his slave and concubine.

Resentful at her forced servitude, yet pleased to once again live, Sendai bids her time like a spider, plotting a latticework of betrayal and revenge.

Background as a member of the Neverwinter Nine:
"While most Drow are wicked and vicious beings, Sendai steadfastly has fought alongside The Kaiser and his band of heroes, earning her a reputation for heroic acts and decisive action. When Aaron Rathmar IV was permanently crippled by a mysterious poison, (leaving a vacancy in the Neverwinter Nine), The Kaiser recommended Sendai as a replacement. Lord Nasher was able to look beyond her race, and judged her on the merits of her actions, inducting her into the organization. "

Edwin Odesseiron

Name: Edwin Odesseiron
Race: Human
Age: 39
Class: Conjurer, Red Wizard of Thay
Favored Weapon: Staff of the Magi
Deity: Gargauth
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Faction: Red Wizards
Challenge Rating: 25

Neverwinter Nights

Background:
When asked about his past, Edwin sneers that he has no intention of revealing such information and that it is none of your business. He further states that you are lucky enough to simply share his company, and then mutters something about leaving whenever he wishes. He obviously cares little for the camaraderie of others, and seems to take more pleasure in speaking to himself than in interacting with the party. His attire brazenly displays the colors of the Red Wizards of Thay, though why a member of that organization would come so far west is puzzling. Edwin does not seem forthcoming with any information.

Background as a member of the Neverwinter Nine:
"Edwin Odesseiron earned his fame during the Bhaal-spawn crisis, and proceeding it, traveled to the Unapproachable East, where he launched a failed coup in Thay. He has since returned to The Sword Coast as a part of The Kaiser's Adventuring Party. The Wizard was admitted to the Neverwinter Nine as a replacement following Nevalle's expulsion."

Isho Oroshi

Name: Isho Oroshi
Race: Human
Age: 21
Class: Fighter, Weapon Master
Favored Weapon: North Wind's Fang
Deity: Bane
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Faction: Wa Mercenaries
Challenge Rating: 25

Neverwinter Nights

Background:
Isho Oroshi is the lifelong companion the the evil warlord known only as The Kaiser. Isho has dedicated his existence to honing his skill with the Katana, and blow for blow, Oroshi is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest duelists alive.

He began life as the child of a renown Kensai in the veiled lands of the distant east, where he trained in his father's dojo. Early on, he rejected his parent's ideology of calm meditation and peaceful contemplation - violently so. At the age of fifteen, Isho first drew steel upon his sire, and though he availed himself well, he was outmatched and consequently exiled.

In shame Isho departed west, where he came into the employ of The Kaiser and his mercenary army. The Blackguard encouraged Isho's darker impulses, and the youth happily participated in a long list of atrocities and depravity beside his new companion.

In time, Isho returned east, and alongside his new allies, razed his father's school, killed the students, and then slew his sensei in a titanic duel atop the smoldering wreckage of his childhood home. He now travels the realms, attracting followers as his infamy grows.

Background as a member of the Neverwinter Nine:
"Little is known about the past of the mysterious swordsman Isho Oroshi. He has assisted The Kaiser in his many adventures since coming to The Sword Coast, and Isho commands a large force of highly skilled mercenaries from the distance nation of Wa. His swordsmanship is said to be without peer, and no foe - beast or man - has ever survived crossing blades with the Kensai."

Isho Joined the ranks of the Neverwinter Nine alongside The Kaiser after thwarting a Luskan plot to slay Lord Nasher - an attack which left Vinara Omis, his predecessor in the group - dead."

Tam Bakk

Name: Tam Bakk
Race: Human
Age: ???
Class: Rogue, Assassin, Undead
Favored Weapon: The Seraph's Talons
Deity: None
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Faction: Nightmasks
Challenge Rating: 25

Neverwinter Nights

Background:
Tam Bakk is the highest ranking of The Faceless's Night Masters, known to his subordinates only as "The Death Seraph." His personal body count is measured in the thousands, and he is remorseless and efficient when it comes to his missions.

Background as a member of the Neverwinter Nine:
"The newest member of the Neverwinter Nine, Tam Bakk arrived only a few short months ago. Since his appearance, his band of sell-swords have dealt a series of crippling blows to the Shadow Thieves, running them entirely out of the Merchant District and decimating them in the Docks."

"Tam was immediately hailed as a great hero, and at The Kaiser's recommendation, was inducted into the Neverwinter nine to fill Callum's long vacant seat."

Granton Granholmn

Name: Granton Granholmn
Race: Half-Orc
Age: 41
Class: Barbarian, Frenzied Berserker
Favored Weapon: Hell's Foundry
Deity: Tempus
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Faction: Raven's Allies
Challenge Rating: 25

Neverwinter Nights

Background:
The newest leader of the Raven's Allies, a mercenary company in the employ of The Kaiser. He was appointed to the Neverwinter Nine to replace Sir Darmon, who was killed on a mission to slay Haxarcanalon - a powerful green dragon plaguing the Unicorn Run.

In Truth, Sir Darmon was knowingly sent to his death, as The Kaiser was well aware he and his men were no match for the beast. The warlord quickly talked the poison addled Lord Nasher into replacing the fallen knight with Granton, who along with his men, took over much of Neverwinter's internal security.

Background as a member of the Neverwinter Nine: "The leader of the Raven's Allies, a mercenary company in the employ of The Kaiser. He was appointed to the Neverwinter Nine to replace Sir Darmon, who was killed on a mission to slay Haxarcanalon - a powerful green dragon plaguing the Unicorn Run."

Dastardly Villains Hiding in Plain Sight

The Neverwinter Nine has been co-opted and infiltrated by the antagonists and their lackeys. To the general citizens of Neverwinter, The Kaiser's band are renown heroes and philanthropists - in reality they are responsible for most of the ills driving The Sword Coast headlong into war. The Kaiser understands the value of good publicity, and is charismatic, (and dangerous), enough to strong-arm the rest of the party into playing along. While the charade is a point of friction among the group, even the more impulsive Edwin and Sendai cannot argue with the results thus far.

It's up to the Knight Captain and their companions to unravel the facade before the antagonists kick off a war - not only between the powers of The Sword Coast, but quite possibly among the gods themselves...

Meet the Ineffectual Comedic Villains: The Black Dog Pirates

The Black Dog Pirates serve as "breather" encounters, allowing players some catharsis - at the expense of deserving antagonists. The game will get tedious if reduced to nothing but a parade of exceedingly difficult battles against god-like opponents. The Pirates and their flunkies are hopelessly outmatched, but their refusal to quit, backed by a large helping of hammy overacting, weird personalities - and unwarranted Ego - should keep these routs amusing. The Knight Captain and companions are some of the most powerful people on the planet - their player(s) deserve to enjoy the occasional curb stomp.

Neverwinter Nights

The game's reoccurring enemies/running joke are a band of pirates hired by Isho Oroshi to harry the Sword Coast. While they are well funded, reasonably competent and, (relatively), powerful, these brigands are hilariously out of their depth when confronting the likes of the Knight Captain. The result of any match up should be a solid drubbing - played largely for comedic effect. Over the course of the adventure, the players will meet and battle the rogues four times:

- Encounter 1:
They player will aid Terukawa against the rogues when he's initially recruited in Highcliff. Captain Blessed and his scurvy crew are trying to conscript the unwilling Ronin just as the Knight Captain appears on the scene. When confronted, the player will have the option of allowing them to either capture the foreigner, bribe them to take a hike or stomp the pirates into the mud. Expect a heaping pile of bloviation and insults from the gang - which should make knocking them around all the more delicious.

- Encounter 2:
When the Knight Captain investigates the piracy besieging the Sword Coast, they will end up raiding The Black Dog's island base. Naturally, Captain Blessed and all his forces will engage in a contest of blades, wits and an extra-large helping of HAM. After receiving a second tub-thumping, the Black Dog Pirates will use the chaos to flee in their last ship - swearing that NEXT TIME, the battle will go differently!

- Encounter 3:
When returning to Neverwinter from the Tomb of Horrors, Blessed and his crew will waylay the Vigilant II, seeking retribution for the destruction of their fleet and the massacre of the pirate army. The result should be a crushing defeat - despite the band's obnoxious claims of gaining great power since the last clash.

- Encounter 4:
After the wedding, (or the victory celebration, depending on romance... or lack-there-of), as the Knight Captain sails off into the Sunset, the pirates will attack his ship one final time - in this instance, completely ignorant of who's aboard. Having been positively trounced, the Black Dogs have given up their vendetta, and are merely looking to engage in some good old fashion low-risk plundering. Unfortunately, Lady Tymora is not smiling upon Captain Blessed. As the rowdy corsairs latch their boarding grapples to the Vigilant II, and prepare to board, the Knight Captain and his/her lover walk up on deck investigate the ruckus. Now is a perfect time to bark Gann's "Shall we... indulge ourselves?" or Safiya's "My magic will erase this... nuisance." Cue the pirate's jaws hitting the floorboards, and give the player the chance to select one final quip, as they charge into battle - "for old time's sake," - roll end credits.

The Goldfish-Poop Gang

The Black Dogs are all about theatrics and having fun. Their encounters tend to have some puzzle or gimmick that's SURE to best the Knight Captain and his companions - THIS TIME FOR SURE!

Neverwinter Nights

From Left to Right:
Trokka Bauche, Vespa Razorgrin, Captain Blessed, Cragimeister, Navareen Nevermourn

Captain Blessed

Name: Captain Blessed - The CAPTAIN
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Race: Human
Class: Swashbuckler
Favored Weapon: Curved Short-sword
Deity: ???
Age: 55

Neverwinter Nights

Background: Captain Blessed is A LARGE HAM. He's flamboyant and absolutely over the top in every possible way, chewing the scenery like Jeremy Irons and BRIAN BLESSED staring together in a Uwe Boll film.

The man is a radical dreamer - his estimations of his crew's capability and reality stand in stark contrast - not that this will ever stop him.

As the game opens, the man is utterly fearless, and is sailing high after pillaging the Sword Coast to near economic ruin. That said... by the end credits.... he will certainly learn to be afraid!

Trokka Bauche

Name: Trokka Bauche - First Mate
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Race: Human
Class: Fighter, Frenzied Berserker
Favored Weapon: Warclub
Deity: ???
Age: 34

Neverwinter Nights

Background: Trokka is the stoic and sole voice of reason among the Black Dog Pirates. Captain Blessed freed him from vicious slavers in Chult, and he became the first member of the pirate's "crew."

Trokka is the man behind the logistics and planning of the entire pirate fleet. Without this towering giant, Captain Blessed and his crew would have never ventured much beyond the first grog-house they crashed into.

While Blessed and his rogues charge into battle screaming, Trokka is planning escape routs and fall back positions. Despite his occasional exasperation, Trokka considers himself eternally in Captain Blessed's debt, and does his best to help the maniac succeed in his outlandish dreams.

Navareen Nevermourn

Name: Navareen Nevermourn - Second Mate
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Race: Halfling
Class: Invisible Blade, Mage, Rogue
Favored Weapon: Dual Rapiers
Deity: ???
Age: 39

Neverwinter Nights

Background: Navareen is a classic sh*t-talker and braggart. While he is genuinely brilliant with his blades, the halfling tends to forget that he's four-feet-four standing on a stool and seventy-two pounds soaking wet.

He's positively enamored with starting verbal conflicts - which typically escalate to bloodshed - and will happily jump into duels with brutes many times his weight-class. Navareen is not above starting a fracas and letting Trokka or Vespa settle it - much to the former's annoyance.

More than once, the halfling has been "accidentally" abandoned at a port of call - but somehow... it never seems to take.

Vespa Razorgrin

Name: Vespa Razorgrin - Third Mate
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Race: Wild Elf
Class: Rogue, Shadow Dancer
Favored Weapon: Dual Daggers
Deity: ???
Age: 74

Neverwinter Nights

Background: Vespa is the newest member of the crew, third mate and an irredeemable psychopath.

She thrills in senseless torture and at some point her brain was magically "rewired wrong." (She experiences physical pain as toe-curling pleasure and anyone battling the elf is in for a highly disturbing experience - assuming they survive her vicious onslaught).

Vespa is positively morbid when engaged in conversation, and the only person who can stand her is Trokka, who values her as a potentially expendable spy and assassin.

Craigmeister

Name: Craigmeister - Helmsman
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Race: Yuan-ti
Class: Favored Soul
Favored Weapon: Heavy Crossbow
Deity: ???
Age: 22

Neverwinter Nights

Background:
Craigmeister is the helmsman and navigator of The Black Dog Pirate's flagship. He's good behind the wheel, knows his way around a sextant and is a cloudcuckoolander when it comes to his gadgetry, (which combust roughly as often as they work).

Given his general personality, Craigmeister was an exceptionally poor fit with Yuan-ti society, and fled as a youth - before his kin could ritually sacrifice him. Rescued by Lantanese gnomes, he was encouraged to explore his creative vision, and explore it he did. (Assuming one considers "explore" a reasonable substitute for "explode"). In fact, Craigmeister "explored" his tent, most of the camp and large portions of the defensive barrier into tiny pieces.

Twas a somewhat bad day as the dinosaurs charged though the breech and ate his gnome companions. "Oh well!," the Yuan-ti thought to himself, "Life's too short to dwell on minor missteps and slight miscalculations!"

While he's not exactly "evil" Craigmeister has absolutely no understanding of "right and wrong" as most others would comprehend it. This makes him both highly entertaining and extremely dangerous.

Graz'zt - The Puppet-Master

The Demon Lord Graz'zt is the one ultimately pulling the strings in NX4. He seeks nothing less than to usurp the power of the Shadow Weave - and with it, Shar's Divinity. He sired his son - The Kaiser - for exactly this purpose, and the Cambion alone knows the true reasons for destabilizing the Sword Coast and usurping control of Neverwinter.

Powerful, cunning and arrogant, Graz'zt covets the title of "Prince of Demons" more than anything in the universe. If his plot succeeds, he just might be strong enough to claim it.
